Bring these questions
- Are my marks sharply bordered spots, melasma, or a mix, and how does that change the plan?
- What role will daily sun protection play, and what happens if I tan during or after treatment?
- Could any laser step darken my pigment, and how would that be managed once I am home?
Why the type matters
Pigment cells in the lower epidermis produce more melanin when triggered by ultraviolet light, heat, inflammation after acne or a procedure, or hormonal change. Where the excess settles decides how a mark looks and behaves, which is why two similar photos can need different plans.
Managed, not erased
Melasma is described as managed rather than removed. It can darken if treated too hard and can return, so gentle settings over several sessions with daily sun protection are part of the approach. Sharper surface spots behave differently and are assessed separately.
Starting points
The First Pigment laser Omakase combines three laser steps in one first visit. Enlighten pigment treatment uses two wavelengths chosen for surface or deeper pigment. Marks left by active acne may settle better once breakouts are controlled, so acne care can come first.
Before you decide
The physician may suggest something different from what you asked for, and will explain why. A recent tan can mean laser is adjusted or postponed. Redness is common afterwards, and treated spots may darken before fading, so confirm a travel buffer at consultation.
